The Weeds Of The Heart

Do you ever feel like your heart looks like this? Or you heart? Or just you in general? We all get filled up with so much “stuff” that we feel like we’re spilling over with weeds. Being grown over mentally, spiritually and emotionally leaves us begging for some open spaces!

And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying Behold, a sower went forth to sow ... And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them... Matthew 13:3, 7

On the surface, the disciples would easily understand this illustration. They would soon learn the spiritual lesson behind it, but for the moment this was a story about a farmer and his planting season. The portion you just read about the thorns springing up is exactly what my heart feels like sometimes and what this picture looks like. There are some great things down in there, but they’re being choked out by the not-so-good stuff.

He also that received seed among the thorns is he that hearth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. Matthew 13:22

If the Lord is sowing seeds of His word and the ground of our hearts is overtaken with thorns and weeds, we’re never going to absorb what He’s trying to share with us. The thought of not grasping every single little seed He wants to give me is sobering, especially when I can wade through and rip those thorns out.

What do the thorns Look like in our everyday lives? How about television, social media and reading thing other than the Bible in excessive amounts? Skipping over quiet time and prayer time? Being busy beyond reason? It’s all the little things that add up, just like a few weeks without weeding the garden chokes out the flowers and bushes that are supposed to be there.

What are your thorns today? Has your spiritual weeding gone by the wayside? I pray that we’ll be intentional in the days to come about preparing the soil of our hearts so it’s reading for the Lord’s sowing. There’s too much to learn and too many blessings coming our way to miss out.
