Light Shining In The Darkness

We've been doing a lot of firsts in the plane lately, but my favorite was my first night flight. 

I had no idea what to expect, except that I knew the city would be lit up when we flew over. It absolutely took my breath away to see every area of town glowing. The high school, the bridges, major buildings, all the homes twinkled against the black backdrop of night.

The city looks completely different from the air than it does on the ground to begin with. It's all recognizable - major streets, buildings, and the river - but there's no grime or litter or disgruntled people recognizable from the air. Walk through town and you can hear it, feel it. But not from high above. Everything is shining and illuminated in a way you don't see from street level.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16

We're called to be that light when we're down on the ground, day or night. Christ shining through us can outshine anything this world tries to dampen us with. There can be so much light that the darkness gets drowned out and the brightness of Christ takes over. 

It doesn't mean that the darkness isn't still there or that it doesn't still need to be dealt with. It just means that the Light wins. We're given the strength and encouragement and tenacity to fight off the darkness, not under our own power but by the power of Jesus Christ Himself. Then we stand up in His name and fight back against the darkness.

Sometimes it takes a change of perspective to be reminded of the impact we can have for the cause of Christ. Let's follow the urging of the Holy Spirit and light up the darkness every chance we get.

The Light is a beautiful sight.

The Lord, My Shield And My Buckler

Sometimes verses of Scripture grab ahold of your heart and don't let go. That happened to me several months in a row as I was reading the books of Psalms and Proverbs.  If you don't already, add reading the Proverb that corresponds to the day of the month - 31 Proverbs, 31 days - to your Bible reading schedule. Similarly, if you read five Psalms every day, you'll read the entire book each month. On the first of the month, Psalm 5:11-12 stood out like they were under a spotlight. Repeatedly. Every month like clockwork. Scriptures About Freedom Perfect For Independence Day

In Sunday School yesterday, we took a break from our chronological study of the Bible to do a fun Fourth of July lesson. We made the youth a packet full of patriotic pictures with Scripture on them. Then we talked about each one in context with the verses around it, not just pulling out verse that sound nice or fit well. After studying several of them, we found a few favorites. They're perfect for creating some digital art of your own, or for using on and in a greeting card.
