DIY Dirty Sodas At The Convenience Store

Last weekend at a local fly-in, the food truck was serving green apple dirty sodas and peace cobbler dirty sodas. Please forgive me, but I had never had a dirty soda before. But how can you resist when those are the two flavors?

We couldn't. It was a heat index over 100 degrees on an antique airfield in the middle of a corn field, so we had multiple dirty sodas! And they were fantastic. I was already looking forward to the next time or place I could order one.

If you're like me and have never had one before, a dirty soda is made by mixing soda fountain drinks with flavored syrups, fruit juices, and cream or creamer. It's a lovely little elevation of a classic soda, making it enhanced and personalized to your particular taste.

So imagine my thrill when I discovered the simplicity of these ingredients and that I could easily make them myself at the gas station drink station. Yep, the convenience store for the win! Here's what I did and how you can recreate it. Enjoy!

I used a 44-ounce XL cup and filled it with the nugget ice so it would soak up the flavors.

At the coffee bar, I added three pumps of French vanilla syrup and three pumps of peace syrup. You could also use the flavor shots on the soda dispenser if that's an option. There are usually multiple flavors in both places, so choose the ones you like best.

Then fill the cup almost all the way with soda. I used Dr Pepper, but you can pick and choose. Try Diet Coke, root beer, Sprite, and ginger ale as your base. Stir it all together to combine completely.

And finally, I pumped four pumps of creamer on top and stirred again. You can use a flavored creamer pump or little pod if you'd like to max out the flavor, or just keep it plan for the creamy texture the dirty soda is known for.

FYI - using real dairy creamer or half-and-half with a highly acidic soda like Mountain Dew can make it curdle or get weirdly foamy. Instead, use one of the oil-based creamers for a smoother mix that won't react to the carbonation.

Mix. Enjoy. Repeat.

In Sunday School yesterday, we took a break from our chronological study of the Bible to do a fun Fourth of July lesson. We made the youth a packet full of patriotic pictures with Scripture on them. Then we talked about each one in context with the verses around it, not just pulling out verse that sound nice or fit well. After studying several of them, we found a few favorites.
