If It Bothers You...

I love order. Organization makes me feel calm and centered. When I'm in the middle of chaos and mess, it always seems like I get just as frazzled as the room.

Recently I was on a professional organizer's web site and I got a revelation. The title of the post was "If It Bothers You...Change It!" I didn't even read the article. I just sat there and meditated on that sentence for several minutes.

I'm really not sure why I had never thought of my organizing in this way before, but it's really very simple. If there's something in your home - a closet, drawer or system - that just gets under your skin, take the time to change it. Usually time is the major obstacle and procrastination gets in the way. But deciding that the bother is worse than the short time commitment changes the way you look at the situation.

But what rocked my world was when I meditated on it further. God opened my eyes to the possibilities "If It Bothers You...Change It" could have on my entire life.

* If your prayer life isn't what it should be... change it!
* If your home doesn't have God's standards all through it...change it!
* If your finances are out of whack...change it!
* If you aren't giving enough to your Christian friendships...change it!
* If your Bible study isn't as strong as it could be...change it!
* If you aren't seeing yourself through the eyes of your Savior...change it!
* If you want to do something differently, in a better way or with a different outcome...change it!

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. Romans 8:13

No matter what excuses we might give, there is nothing in this earthly life that we can't change. God has graced us with His power, the ability to overcome the flesh that says, I guess things have to stay just the way they are.

Whether it's your organizational habits or the amount of quality time you spend in prayer and Bible study, you can change. If something in your life is bothering you, ask the Lord to show exactly how He'd like you to change it. I did, and was truly surprised at some of the ways He showed me to follow His instruction more closely.

So what's bothering you? And how can you change it?

  1. Fabulous post! As I read the first paragraph, I felt as if I were reading about myself. I, too, love organization, and the lack of it truly stresses me out. Your post was an excellent reminder that if I'm unsatisfied with something, rather than complaining, I just need to fix it. Thank you!

  2. The hardest step to take is the one that makes a difference. Excuses are easy. Complaining is easy. Change is difficult, but it can actually calm the soul. Thanks so much Dana!
