Utilizing The Tools Of Good Communication

Every time we fly, my smart watch tells me that we're in a loud environment ... as if I didn't know. If we try to talk to each other without our headsets, it looks and feels like a vintage cartoon with the sound muted. Read lips much?

But with the headsets on and the mic touching your lips, you can hear and understand quite well. They're not noise cancelling, but they shut out enough of the background noise to make communication possible.

They were designed for that purpose, which makes all the difference. The tools needed to communicate effectively were created to change a loud, overwhelming situation into a toned-down, easy-listening conversation. And if you can't communicated in an airplane, things can go very wrong very quickly.

King Solomon, who lived roughly 3,000 years ago, understood the importance of good communication tools - and he definitely wasn't flying a plane! He knew that face-to-face communication was essential for being in a strong relationship with anyone, and the book of Proverbs lays out so many of the tools that act as mufflers for the bad and microphones for the good. There are dozens of verses in there about our words,  and here are just a handful to get you started:

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. Proverbs 10:19

The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out. Proverbs 10:31

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. Proverbs 12:18

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. Proverbs 18:13

Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Proverbs 29:20

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Proverbs 31:26

Did any of these verses hit home? Did they convict your heart, either that they are one of your strengths, or maybe they need some work? This is the time to go to God, talk through the way you use your words, and strengthen the tools of communication God has placed in His word for you.

The Lord, My Shield And My Buckler

Sometimes verses of Scripture grab ahold of your heart and don't let go. That happened to me several months in a row as I was reading the books of Psalms and Proverbs.  If you don't already, add reading the Proverb that corresponds to the day of the month - 31 Proverbs, 31 days - to your Bible reading schedule. Similarly, if you read five Psalms every day, you'll read the entire book each month. On the first of the month, Psalm 5:11-12 stood out like they were under a spotlight. Repeatedly. Recovering An Old Card Table And Making It Usable Again

This card table recover project has been on my to-do list for months. I've been using it as my workspace in the craft room for quite some time, and it sees a lot of abuse. Here it is now, with a neutral cover on it so I can take better pictures for my tutorials. There were dents and dings in the old blue covering from metal tools. And yes, I've used my embossing heat tool on it several times, leaving pretty good scars. The padding underneath the blue cover also made it difficult to keep paper crafts flat when adhering them together, so it was time for something new. That's where a simple vinyl tablecloth comes in handy. The process to recover the table is pretty simple, but I learned a couple of lessons the hard way. I share them with you now.
