The More Things Change, The More I Realize Things Are Changing
It started with a conversation about just having two dogs now. We were up to four, then we lost three of them in a year and got a new puppy. We've never had a puppy this young, so that was a change in itself. That talk of change made me realize just how much change there has been lately, some major, some minor, and some just annoying.
Let's start with annoying and get it out of the way. After almost 15 years in this house, the string on the in-the-door blinds broke. That means replacing the entire door, which we've obviously never done before, as well as the change of look and feel in the living room. Home ownership is amazing, until it means projects that you weren't planning on, but we've already found what we need and have plans to switch them out.
If you've ever been to our office, you know that it's just the two of us and it's very quiet. I can't write or think with lots of noise, which is going to change after this coming week. We're hosting the ribbon cutting for our new Above Main second-story quiet workspace, and I couldn't be more excited to offer this large room overlooking Main Street to residents and visitors alike. But it's also a major change, knowing that people will be coming and going after years of just us.
A very good change came a few months ago with the opening of a new ice cream shop on the south side of town. Christian is a very young entrepreneur who took a tiny walk-up building and turned it into a viral social media spectacular. And the ice cream is genuinely amazing! He's so creative and so personable that he's drawing in crowds - including me, who's been a die-hard fan of many of our other treat shops. It's a good thing I can have ice cream as much as I want because I'm an adult!
Recently I've been spring cleaning (please don't judge...) and going through some of my mom's boxes that I've had in storage since she died over two years ago. In one of them was this Six Million Dollar Man office that she absolutely adored. She got it right about the time I was born, and I wasn't allowed to really play with it, so it's still in beautiful condition. Yes, I cried when I pulled it out. But now it's time to sell it and pass it along to someone else who will love it and care for it as much as she did. That's a huge change in my thinking and my attitude, as a few months ago I wouldn't have even considered it.
And finally, I had to get a new headshot this week. The last one was about three years old, and to be honest, it really didn't look like me anymore. I wasn't wearing my glasses, it was in a stuffy room with a backdrop, and it was very posed. That's just not me anymore, so it was time for a change. There's a great story behind my smile that I'll save for another day, and I love the train in the background - there's a story behind that, too. So change is just change - what's different is how we react to and interact with it in the course of it playing out. So what changes are you working with this weekend?
