Bonding Brothers ... Or ... At Least They're Tolerating Each Other

Cooper has now been with us longer than he hadn't been with us. Diesel's had a baby brother for four months ... whether he likes it or not.

As a 3-month-old puppy, Cooper was the youngest dog we'd ever had. That's definitely taken some getting used to, especially with his brother being 9 years old.

One thing they do have in common is destruction. They love to rip and tear and shred. Dollar store toys are constant purchases, and we've started letting them shred (not suck or eat) cardboard boxes so they have something to get their energy out with safely and with supervision.

The tiny dog is 7 months old now, and he's starting to get more cuddly than before. He's always been very independent and perfectly happy playing with toys on his own. We've been working with him to not be jealous of Diesel and not bark incessantly, and some days we think we're making headway.

The big dog, on the other hand, has been a cuddle from day one. Touch is his love language, just like me, so we're happy just being together. Our hope is that Cooper will pick up on that energy and be a cuddler someday, too.

But times aren't always quiet. Dachshund puppies have SO much energy, and I think Cooper has enough energy for about seven puppies. There are moments, we're sure, when Diesel wonders when we're sending this tiny thing back. Like when he has a foot in his ear.

Fast-forward five or ten minutes, and they're cozied up together. You can't do something with one without the other or there's a dramatic tantrum. From Cooper, not Diesel.

Outside, they're attached at the hip. They love to run, sniff through the leaves, try to chase deer, and get as close to the ponds as they possibly can. Luckily it's not been terribly cold this past week, so we only had to put their coats on a couple of nights.

It's been a beautiful holiday season with our boys, and we're looking forward to whatever 2026 has for our pack.
