As The Deer Craveth Berries, So My Soul Longeth After Thee, Lord
From the first day we moved into our home in 2011, we've been welcoming entire herds of deer to the property. This year we've seen everything from enormous bucks with beautiful racks to does with twin fawns. It's quite the sight, especially when we open the door for the dogs first thing in the morning and there they are!
This weekend one of the does brought her twins to the driveway for a berry buffet. One of our trees drops them every summer, but the deer love them and are happy to clean up the mess they make.
Even our dogs barking from the window didn't deter these three from their special treat. A little bit later, they had apparently called all their friends because there were seven of them all over the driveway helping themselves.
When Christians think about deer, we usually think of the hymn As The Deer Pants For the Water and the first verse from Psalm 42: As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
We also have two ponds on the property, and we often see the deer drinking their fill, but it's nothing compared to their excitement over berries. They were out there for the better part of an hour, and the fawns kept eating until their mom said it was time to keep moving.
When was the last time your heart thirsted after God and His word like this? I've had a couple of days recently when I haven't done my Bible study first thing in the morning, and I definitely felt parched. When your soul is used to being fed from the word, it's a shock to the system not to have it.
By the third day, there was nothing going to stop me from reading Scripture and my newest study book. I was as ravenous as a deer going after berries on a hot summer day. It may sound silly, but it's the absolute best way I can describe it.
As soon as I did a word study that was on my heart and got through a chapter of my newest book, all was right with the world again. Believe it or not, I was much less anxious, not as irritable, and in a much better frame of mind. That's the power and the draw of God's word.
My prayer for you this week is that you won't let anything pull you away from your quiet time with the Lord. Let your soul feast on what it's craving, just like my deer friends. (Pun completely intended.) Go after His truth and His promises with everything you've got, and He'll bless you exceeding abundantly above all you could ever ask or think.
