Holiday Centerpieces For The Perfect Tablescape
As we quickly approach the holiday season, let's promise each other that we're not going to do the same-old-same-old decorating. If I hear anyone say, But that's the way I've always done it, I'll probably sigh. It's time to get creative!
Every year it's my pleasure to decorate for one of our community banquets. For the past two years we've used beautiful blue and gold decorations that coordinate with the invitations. A new team member suggested we dress them up with pops of white. That combination had never occurred to me, but I rolled with it. And it turned out great!
So here's the 10-point philosophy we unconsciously used that makes total sense when putting together a fabulous holiday centerpiece.
1. Something textured. The blue deco mesh that goes down first rolls naturally from being on the cardboard tube, and we left it that way. The curl and the glitter give it a fluid look.
2. Something shiny. The mirrors on each table are different finishes and shapes, mostly because the dollar store didn't have 25 of the same thing. The result is a metallic shine that isn't just a cookie cutter look on every table.
3. Something reflective. Having the mirrors reflecting the light and the glass on top of it really makes the centerpiece pop. We had the lights turned low for mood lighting, making the mirrors look like little spotlights coming out of the center.
4. Something for a container. Some tables had blue bottles, others had small white glass vases, and they alternated around the room. The combination of inserts in each container was also different based on the height of the vase and the variety of pieces we had to work with.5. Something sparkling. If it doesn't sparkle, is it really the holidays?
6. Something glittered. Glitter definitely isn't a necessity, especially if you're not a fan of cleaning up after yourself. A little but of glitter can go a long way if it's attached to something that's going to catch the light and make people smile.
7. Something tall. But not too tall. There's nothing worse than having to look around a too-tall centerpiece to talk to your guests. But something wispy like our feathers and branches worked perfectly.
8. Something with movement. Every time someone walked past a table, the feathers in the vases moved a little. It was eye-catching, it was fun, and it drew your attention to the tablescape. Find one little thing that can add motion and interest to your centerpiece.
9. Something to scatter. I'm a big fan of little things. I'm a big fan of sprinkles. Combine the two and you've got little things sprinkled around. In our case, we found a pinecone/tiny white pumpkin scatter that was not only adorable, but it was easy to clean up afterward. Score!
10. Something to tie it together. With a little bit of white in our vases, it was a no-brainer to add a couple of white pumpkins to pull our fall theme together. They're on point, a little glamorous, and a lot of sparkle for not a lot of money. We declare victory for this year's banquet with some photo-worthy centerpieces.
