As The Pack Grows, So Does The Puppy

Cooper, our newest pack addition, has been with us for almost two months now. It's been a roller coaster - fun, tiring, frustrating, joyful, exasperating, and so interesting. We've not had a puppy this young before (he's not even 5 months old yet), so that's taken some getting used to. By all four of us!

We're thrilled with how well Diesel and Cooper are getting along. The tiny dog adores Diesel and is pretty much glued to his side all day. That's the big dog's foot that Cooper's curled up against. Diesel does have his limits, though, and will let Cooper know in no uncertain terms when he's done playing for the moment. Does Cooper listen? Sometimes.

Diesel plays a little intensely with him, like he did with his sister Callie, but he's so much bigger than him that we have to keep an eye on them. Puppies' heads don't belong in big dogs' mouths...or so we've been led to believe. Diesel could easily snap Cooper in two, but he's so gentle (usually) and so full of energy (for the most part). They're so much fun to watch.

Diesel had an ear infection in those adorable German Shepherd ears, so he's was tired and sore and grumpy for the better part of two weeks while we medicated and cleaned them. He wasn't in the mood to play with the puppy, so we kept Cooper extra entertained for a while. But now he's completely back to normal and can apparently hear better than ever.

Cooper is still discovering the property - how big it is, what else lives there, what certain smells are. I try to keep expanding our walks so he can see and smell and listen, and he's happy to be doing whatever Diesel is doing. The big dog can be a terrible influence, though, as his favorite thing in the world is chasing the deer out of the clearing. Thank goodness Cooper stays on his leash or he'd end up in David County, I'm sure.

So our new pack of four is growing and thriving. We're absolutely sure Cooper's not a chi-weenie like the shelter told us. We're thinking dachshund mixed with miniature pinscher at this point, as he's more than doubled his weight and height in a month. We've been through so much pain this summer, losing two dogs in two months, but Cooper is helping our hearts heal. We can't wait to see what the fall brings!
