Homemade Butter In Just 6 Minutes
Yes, you read that right. You can make homemade butter in less than 10 minutes.
You may have already known that, but I learned something new. And I'm pretty proud of the tasty results.
I was researching Wild West hands-on activities for our Summer Celebration at youth group, and a post popped up about how butter was churned back in the day. Then it showed how to simulate that process in a plastic container. I was pretty skeptical, especially when teenagers and their attention spans would be involved. But I was willing to test it out and see if they could handle it.
Boy, was I surprised at how easy and fun this is!
So here is all you do: pour about 8 ounces of heavy whipping cream into a plastic container with a tight lid on it. Make sure the container is big enough so there's plenty of room to shake, shake, shake. If there's not, it won't thicken right.
Add a pinch of salt - I used Danny's fancy flake salt because I can.
Then put the lid on as tightly as humanly possible. This is the voice of experience talking, so trust me.
Let the shaking commence. You're about to get an amazing arm and upper body workout. At least that's what my smartwatch told me at the 5-minute mark. You're going to shake this container as hard as you can for 6-7 minutes. After a couple of minutes, you'll feel the consistency start to change as it gets whipped around. Don't worry about checking it until at least 5 minutes in, and then keep going until it's pretty and smooth and creamy.
We let the kids do this, and the younger ones gave up after a couple of minutes and Danny finished it for them. He's so sweet that way. The older teens turned it into a competition - who could shake it harder and get theirs done faster. That was absolutely the best part of the whole process.
Except for the samples at the end. I made cornbread, to stick with the Wild West theme, and it was an amazing combination.
You can also stir in honey or cinnamon (or both) to make artisan flavored butter, which is what I'm going to do with this newest batch. Plan on eating it quickly, though, before it separates back out and you have to reshake it. But trust me, going through it won't be a problem - it's that good!
