Bible Pictionary Turns Powerful

To wrap up our five-month youth group series on words of our faith, we gave everyone a chalk marker and  had them pull out their Bible. They could pick any word they wanted to draw, and we had to use every ounce of our deduction skills to figure out what it was.

Danny gave the example. He drew three "and" symbols. We figured it out. Then I asked him how many times it appears in the Bible...he's still counting.

That, my friends, is my dragon. I started with the head and had to convince them Pac-Man's not in the Bible. While I never claimed to be an artist, I'm pretty proud of this guy, despite the fact that he's sporting a giant bouffant hairstyle.

With the two examples out of the way, we could not have been more proud of our teens and the words they chose. Once they drew them, they had to explain where they'd found them in Scripture and in what story they were used. One girl only drew a single wheel before someone knew it was a chariot - she'd been reading about Pharaoh's army being crushed in the Red Sea chasing the Hebrews. A little later she had to draw the sound coming out of a lion's mouth to depict roaring, which was in Proverbs. For some reason, earth took forever to identify, until the moon was added. He quoted the creation story from Genesis, which made me cry because that young man has only been saved for a few weeks. Rain was self-explanatory, and the light from the candle became a lesson on the Light of the World.

The yield sign was quite the ordeal, as the girl realized halfway in that she couldn't put any words on it. We went from trees to lollipops to the Iowa State Fair (everything edible on a stick) before someone got close with stop sign. After a quick lesson on what octagonal means, they got around to yield. Her mini driver's exam lesson on yielding in a car and yielding to the will of God took my breath away, while convicting my heart. Planted from Psalm 1:3 became a tomato plant because he didn't want anyone to think it was another tree. Then we talked about why church is God's house and all the different kingdoms in the Bible - there are a lot of different kinds. And then that same new Christian said he'd been reading about this and wasn't sure what it meant but wanted to draw it - somehow he'd ended up in Ezekiel and read about the cherubims and was fascinated. Don't ever, ever stop talking to young people about God and His word - they're definitely listening and it's changing lives.
