He Is Risen, He Is Risen Indeed!
Have you ever studied the Resurrection Eggs with a group of kids? Each of the 12 eggs has a miniature inside that corresponds to part of the story of Holy Week, and you can read the Scriptures along with it.
Our youth group has done these eggs every other year for several years, but we now have a mixed group - some who've been around a while and four new kids. (Three of whom have never even heard the entire Easter story.)
To mix it up a little and be interesting to everyone, we mixed all the eggs up and put them on a decorative egg plate that looks like a lady bug. Then I printed out 12 clues and a question to give them some hints about what's in the eggs. There was something in each clue that pointed them to a certain item - the donkey had no saddle, the whip was torture with leather, and the cup held drinks for all.
Before they could read the clues, they had to open all the eggs, memorize what was where, and put them all back together. Then each youth read and clue, guessed what item it was, and tried to remember where they'd seen it. It was absolute mayhem as they attempted to "help" each other and teach the story parts at the same time.
One of our boys who hadn't heard the Easter story before was very concerned that the last egg was empty. "There must be something missing," he cried and held it up. Danny and I were already emotional from the story itself, but that pushed me over the edge.
You're right. Something's missing. Jesus wasn't where they left Him.
And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. Matthew 28:5-7
Suddenly the chaos became calm as the resurrection reality sank in. That borrowed and barely used tomb was empty because a miracle that would affect all of humanity was taking place. That nothing inside the egg made the point clear that nothing would ever be the same because Jesus rose, just as He said He would.
Our entire class has now heard the Gospel presentation in a way they understand. Please pray with me that those who are saved will grow in their faith this Easter season, and that those who haven't gotten saved yet will have their hearts moved by the Holy Spirit in a mighty way this week. What better time to get saved than our celebration of the day that it was finished?
